Upon arrival, we depart to Wangai through Poli and Finyole. Picnic lunch on the way. We cross the Faro river to arrive at Wangai. Welcome by the Lamido, camp, dinner and night in the grounds of the Lamido's palace.
Days 4,5 and 6, Alantika Mountains
We have now left the 21st century behind and will be spending the next few days in a simpler, slower, utterly fascinating world. Start our trek into the Alantika Mountains, where there are no more roads, no motor driven vehicles, no piped water, walking from one village to another, accompanied by local porters, discovering the traditions of the Koma people. The further we walk from Wangai, the more remote and interesting the communities become. Because there is no road access, some of the tiny hamlets at higher altitudes have maintained their culture intact, even to the point of clothing themselves in leaves alone. It is a privilege to be able to spend time in these self sustaining communities, almost entirely untouched as they are by modern civilisation. Their activities and traditions are greatly influenced by ancestor worship. Millet is the main food crop but they grow many other vegetables plus bananas, and rear goats and fowls. The natural vegetation is their pharmacy. We start each day with early breakfast and then begin trekking. At about midday we stop for light lunch and rest. We start off again at about 3pm when the sun's heat has waned and continue to our next overnight camp in a village.
Day 7, Alantika – Wangai
Today we trek back to Wangai after visiting a Borroro village. We can chat with our host, the Lamido, who is the village chief as well as its spiritual leader.
Day 8, Wangai –Ngaoundere – Night train to Yaounde
